How many books fit in a moving box?

Books are dense — a box fills up by weight long before it fills by space. Pick a box size and get a realistic count plus the weight to expect.

Pack books like a mover.

Books go in small boxes. This is the one rule of moving books.

  1. Small boxes, always.

A large box of books can top 40 kg. Nobody can lift that safely.

  2. Pack spine-down or flat.

Alternate spine directions so the box stays level; fill gaps with paper.

  3. Tape the bottom twice.

Book boxes are the ones that burst. Double-tape every seam.

  4. Label the weight.

Write the approximate kg on the box so nobody grabs it one-handed.

Worked example

One concrete case, with the assumptions spelled out.

120 mixed books in small boxes

At 3 cm per book, a small box holds about 13 books (~9 kg). 120 books need 10 boxes.

ƒ(x)per box = floor(box length ÷ average thickness), capped by book height
